From the report on the study conducted by the GI Foundation of South Africa based on the independent laboratory analysis done on NkosiBar by international laboratories Merieux NutriSciences

The study was conducted according to ISO 26642:2101 (Food products – Determination of the glycaemic index [GI] and recommendation for food classification), which is based on a Joint Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and The World Health Organization Expert Consultation Group on carbohydrates in human nutrition

The bar contains low GI carbohydrate, more protein than most bars in the market and some fat, including the good fats omega-3 and mono-unsaturated fatty acids, in more or less equal amounts, as well as 100% or more of the NRV (Nutrient Reference Values) of most of the vitamins for individuals 4 years and older. It also passes the NPC (Nutrient Profiling Calculator), which is an international benchmark for making health claims on labels.

The product can be used as a balanced meal replacement, as it contains carbohydrate,protein and fat in more or less equal ratios of 1:1:1, containing about 32% low GI carbs, 34% protein and 34% fat of the total energy of the bar.The bar is exceptionally high in fibre (4.9g per bar), which helps to slow down digestion of the carbohydrate. The product came to a low GI value and complied with the specifications for endorsement with the GI Foundation of South Africa's Often Foods (Low GI/green) logo.

For what age is Nkosi?

If you can chew an Nkosi bar, you can enjoy an Nkosi bar. We recommend not giving Nkosi to under 2 year olds, but it can be enjoyed by all other ages. The reason Nkosi was developed is to aid in the critical developmental stages of children. It has been lovingly engineered to provide the highest possible nutritional value while tasting great and being reasonably priced

The market-related retail value of an Nkosi Bar is around R30. As a non-profit our aim is to provide Nkosi’s at a price that allows us to provide nutritional safety nets for developing children. In line with this mission, boxes are made available at a reduced price, so concerned people and organisations can help more children. We ask that if you use Nkosi’s for yourself or your family (which we encourage) that you consider sponsoring a box into the Nkosi Program. It just so happens that our approach to give children the best we’re able to, has resulted in a high-quality product that is also desirable for professional athletes and mothers trying to increase the nutritional intake of their children. The Nkosi Program is how we provide support to children who are under nutritional pressure.

The Nkosi Program supports children all over the country every school day with Nkosi Bars and other food to provide nutritional safety nets for them. We partner with some of the leading companies in SA to make a real impact on the children in the area of their operations.

There are many ways in which you can be part of helping our children! You can help by spreading the word about Nkosi Bars.

  1. You can buy a box and hand them out to help you tell our story or;
  2. give them to vulnerable people in your area. Many people like to keep a box in the car and hand them out at traffic lights, choosing to rather give a fully balanced meal than money to people asking for help.
  3. You can talk to your school tuck shop and ask them to make Nkosi Bars available to improve the healthier options available to children looking for a tasty snack.
  4. Your business or your place of work can become part of sponsoring a Preschool in need of nutritional support, we have a very long list of schools and centres that would be so thankful for this critical help.
